I tried searching everywhere but found no solution other than to make a post. I have an iMac 2012 model that i havent used in a while i decided to format it because it was so slow. After trying to install the OS again i could not log inn with the apple id previously used " This apple id has not yet been used with the appstore". After a lot of google searches i made a bootable USB drive w Catalina, previous OS on the device was yosemite. I hold in options key at start up and when i click boot from USB i get the prohibited sign. Videos suggested to enable startup from USB from "startup security Utility" but the only option i have is "firmware password Utility" Any suggestions ?

it sounds like something didn't work right with the imaging process. You'll need to confirm that you imaged the USB correctly. Mount it on a running Mac and see what's on the USB disk.

There is no "startup security" on a 2012 iMac, because there's no t2 chip.

If there is a firmware password installed on the iMac, and if YOU DO NOT KNOW IT, you're in trouble.

Apple will reset this, but ONLY if you provide the original sales receipt.
No receipt? Sorry, they won't touch it.

Where did you get this iMac?
