Hi
I found this beautiful 17" eMac at a yard sale! it is pristine I fell in love. I went about removing the stuff left behind by the old owner. Now it does not boot. After a while I get the question mark on a folder. I know what I did but not how to get out of it. I have no OS X disk to start it from. What do I do now? I did try to reset some things but no good. Boy do I feel dumb!

Flashing question mark indicates that boot up volume cannot be found. Try holding option while booting to see if it gives any volume to boot from. If it can't find anything, your HD might be dead

No other mac,but

No I do not have another mac. I just tried holding the option on boot as you suggested and I did get a change. Now there is a refresh symbol and a right arrow with a watch floating . The mouse works. That is as far as anything gets. I am sure it was something I deleted and a repair install would fix it. I just do not know how to get it back without the disc! Can I use any OSX disc?

You need either a full retail OSX disc or the system specific osx disc that came with that unit. And I could be wrong about this but i think you cannot use an osx upgrade disc either.

its worth to point out that the grey system discs that come with each mac are realy only work on that specific mac means:
you can not boot for example a 700mhz emac (had one here from a mate )with a disc from a 1.42 mhz emac , i tried that too at first , lucky i have a retail disc too

You can call Apple and see if they still sell the replacement disks for that.

How to contact Apple?

Seems like getting the right gray disc would be the way to go then. I spent some time trying to find an email address to ask how to get them and I tried calling but could only get voicemails and so far no call backs. Anybody know where to go for the gray discs??
