Can't boot normally after manually safe booting

Hi,

I have a 2 generations old iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.6 .

Earlier, I entered safe boot by holding the Shift key between the start tone and the apple appearing on screen. Once I finished, I shut down the computer and turned it back on. The computer still entered safe boot. I then restarted the computer with the same results. Any ideas?
