Is there a difference between booting from a flash drive versus DVD disc? I know a flash drive is faster.

FWIW, 8GB flash drives are $6 at Microcenter...

I know they are cheap, I just don't have a store that sells them near me and I definitely don't want to wait for shipping.

yes you need a 8GB USB the file must expand when it makes it a bootable disc

FYI make sure you make it using one of the many guides posted on here or the web its not just a copy the install file to a stick or dvd that wont make it bootable

Yeah if your going to burn to DVD you need a dual layer DVD. Single layer won't fit. I plan to burn to dual layer as I have some lying round and not any big enough flash drives.

This is what I missed. I've been on these forums for over 4 years and I'm quite experienced with this stuff. I know it's not as simple as copying over the download from the MAS. I just forgot that the dmg expands.

FYI, this dude's guide says it requires 4GB of free space...
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1404860/

^His guide is incorrect. Even using a flash drive, you need an 8GB flash drive. A 4GB flash drive doesn't work. The compressed dmg is 4.35GB...

I have a 20+mbps connection so I think I'll just copy the installer to one of my externals for future use and install ML using the installer (not a clean install). Then I'll use Internet Recovery to do a clean install.

I tried a dvd for 10.7 and it was still booting after a half hour.

I gave up and just used my ipod to boot off,

So much easer.

DVds are just super slow and the installer is not ment to boot of dvd at all, now.

apple only sells it on flash drives, so thats kind of a hint

I cleaned installed Lion from a DVD and found no issues, the installer did work on DVD.

Yea, me too. My biggest flash drive is 4GB because I don't need 8GB of space. I hardly use flash drives. I used a regular normal single layer DVD for Lion although the Lion installer is 3.8GB or so versus the 4.35GB of ML.

Same, I hardly use flash drives either. I'm just glad I do have some dual layer DVDs lying round doing nothing otherwise I would go out and buy a 8GB memory stick.

I think I left my DL-DVDs at home (I'm in college) so I'm SOL with that method.

If anyone has a fast (relative term) internet connection, this guy's method doesn't require any kind of flash drive.
