My current apple id login name is my old email that I no longer use anymore. I want to change it to my @me.com email address that I use for my email and iCloud. When I try to change it, it says the @me.com is already in use as an apple id. So then I sign out and sign in using my @me.com email, and it redirects me to the iTunes account with my old email.

So clearly the two emails are somehow associated, but I don't want my old email (gmail) used for iTunes as I don't use it anymore.

I was able to change the actual email over to my me.com one, so I get iTunes receipts at that email, it's just that when I log in it still says my username is the old email.

As of right now you cannot change an existing Apple ID to a @me.com address. Apple considers all @me.com addresses to be Apple IDs already.

Supposedly there will be a fix for this in the future, but I wouldn't hold out hope of it being anytime soon.

I'm fine with using a different apple id, but when I try to sign in to my me.com apple id, it just takes me to my old apple id with the gmail login, like how a web page redirects you.
