Just bought the MacBook Pro M1, added the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter from Apple store, but found out that, when I connect my iPhone or iPad it won't charge :( Neither does my External LG monitor works when connected through the adapter.
Anyone else experienced same issues and anybody heard of a solution?
Above issue is only working when connected directly to the Macs USB-C port...

There are several reports of M1 MacBooks that have a problem when charging through a dock or hub. I'm not saying that is an issue for your MacBook Pro but I would contact Apple just in case. It doesn't sound normal especially with the MacBook Pro charger which is significantly larger than the charger for the MacBook Air.

You might have a defective MacBook. Talk to Apple support.

Edit: I just noticed that it doesn't charge your iPad. The fact that it doesn't charge the iPad either probably means it is a defective adapter.

I am having the same problem. If I go direct to the USB-C port, it charges. ANY hub (the multi-port adapter, my thunderbolt hub, etc.) it fails to charge.

Edit: resetting the SMC fixed it.

The adapter charges my M1 MacBook Pro. Maybe something wrong with your adapter. I’d swap it.

As some of you recommended :) I have now swapped the multiport adapter at Apple, but same issue with the new one.
I found out that the USB port is capable of charging for example an iPhone and if I connect the USB-C charger that followed the MBP M1 it can charge the MBP through the USB-C port on the multiport adapter, but not the other way around, if I connect the iPhone to the USB-C port on the multiport adapter and the charger to the built in USB-C port on the MBP!

It dosen't make sense to me if the USB-C port on the multi-port wasn't a two way port, with the possibilities that USB-C gives.

Any recommendations?

The USB-C port on the adapter is for only for charging the Mac (or a USB-C iPad if the adapter is plugged into the iPad.)
It is not a data port.

Thank you very much for this link chrfr.
I tried with the first adapter I received, with my iPad Pro where it didn't charge, but just tried with my iPhone yesterday evening, so I will try with my iPad again tonight with the new adapter from Apple or else they will get a call again ;)

I think you've misunderstood. The USB-C port is a power input port. When you use the adapter on a USB-C equipped iPad, like a current iPad Air or Pro, the port will charge that iPad. It will not charge an iPad if the adapter is plugged into a Mac and the iPad is connected to the adapter. The adapter will not charge an iPhone unless it's plugged into the USB-A port.

DO an SMC reset. I had problems getting the multi-port adapter to charge until I did that.

Also a good test is to just run the power cable from the supplied charger to to the two ports.

Bump to an old thread but slightly different issue. I have the A2119 model and it works fine with my M1 Macbook Pro, charging it, high refresh rate ouptut on HDMI, and USB hub in my monitor connected to the dongle.

... but I can't charge any other laptops (eg Dell Latitudes, Lenovo X1, etc) on USB C. Works fine with Macbook though. Any ideas?

I've tried various chargers connected too (three different Lenovo 65w chargers, the Apple 61w charger) but no luck.

Another bump to this thread.... same with an HP elitebook x360.

Frustrating.
