Hi guys! My boyfriend has a pair of AirPods he gave me because he said that it stopped working 1.5 years ago. He used them for 2 months when he claimed that the speakers blew out. He brought his phone into service during the warranty period, and also mentioned his AirPods not working, but he didn’t have them with him. The Apple advisor said that the poor audio is very common and is normal for airpods(?!). I’m not sure if there was miscommunication between them because my boyfriend came to America 3 years ago from Iran, so his accent is pretty thick and so is his misunderstandings with apple’s warranty.

So now fast forward more than a year and a half later, and now he gave them to me. Him telling me they blew out was a little hard for me to understand since he listens to music VERY LOW.

I put them in my ear and RIGHT away I noticed that it felt like I was putting ear plugs in. I felt a suction feeling in my ears as oppose to mine. I looked in the AirPods and it looks like the metal grills are blocked. Total different feel from my AirPods and his. Also the music sounds very muffled, as if it’s blocked.

I brought it to Apple and they tried cleaning them - but no good. Once again I looked at the metal grill and it looks much different. I’m not sure if his earwax was more liquid (tmi) and it got caught in the grill as oppose to on top of it. He used them about 30 times total so it’s VERY mint and not a scratch on the case nor AirPods.

Are there any techniques to clean them better? Thanks.

I’ll upload a photo of his AirPods

You can see the speakers on the first one so much clearer than the second one. In person you can’t see the two speakers on his clogged one, and you can see them on mine.

Try using mounting putty. Is use it a couple times a week to clean mine. It’s cheap. You can get it at Walmart, target or pretty much anywhere that sells home goods.

Take a piece and press it firmly against the grill then pull it off. It might take a few times but it should work, unless there’s a lot of wax pressed down into the grill.
