This looks specific to my computer as I've tried it on coworkers and it's fine, but when I try to plug my phone into my macbook pro, the phone will basically be recognized (so it buzzes/shows charging symbol on battery) for about .25/seconds, then drops, then repeats every second or so, but never connects.

Is there any known issue with this? I have tried to look it up, but haven't found anything yet. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am unable to transfer a larger video file b/c of this.

I tried a different port, but not a different cable. Thoughts are though that that's nullified though b/c this one worked immediately on somebody else's computer. Can confirm too that this happened with old phone with different cables as well.

Might have something to do with it. It does say "A software update is required to connect to my phone"

Yet, when I click it and it tries to update I get this

Software Update

Installation failed

Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.
