I've got a similar problem with my iMac End 2009 after installing OS 10.11 El Capitan. iTunes insist on logging in and when I do log in persists in 'unknown error -50'. I am unable to update apps due to this.

I had the same problem. Mid 2007 MacBook Pro. Had third party RAM installed, installation failed due to this. Had to remove one of the modules to get El Capitan to install. After getting El Capitan going finally, I had some major issues with iCloud related tasks. I saw my devices in iCloud.com...noticed that the only device I have that didn't work also didn't have a serial number assigned.

Profiler showed the same issue. I had my logic board replaced years ago, so they took off the serial number of my MacBook Pro from inside the battery case....thought I was done for.

Found the serial number from an old gmail email circa 2007. Used a tool to rewrite the serial to my mac. Restarted. All works.
