can't connect to cable internet

I'm back home from college for a bit and I'm trying to get my ibook onto my parents cable internet (cox cable). When I plug it into the modem it picks up an IPv6 address, IP address, and subnet mask, but I still doesn't connect. When I click the "assist me" button in the sys prefs to configure the connection it tells me it can't connect automatically and that I need either a DHCP client ID or a PPPoe account name and password. We weren't given any ID or account/password to use, it's supposed to just connect automatically. We never got any software to install either. My brother set up the internet and said all he ever did was plug in the modem and it worked (on an old HP desktop).

What am I missing?

You have to plug it into your iBook, and then restart the cable modem by unplugging it for 30 seconds and then plugging it back in and waiting for all the lights to come on. Have fun!

You're welcome. It's really annoying that you have to do that isn't it? You may think of getting a 4 port router to eliminate this every time you need to switch computers. This would also give you wireless (if it's a wireless router and you have an AirPort card in the iBook). I recommend the Linksys WRT54G.

Oh, you could also have all your computers plugged into the 4 ports and capable of browsing the internet at the same time. The firewall in the Linksys is also really good.
