iCloud Can't disable iCloud Sync for Books

I absolutely do not want to sync my ebooks in Apple Books with the iCloud, but I can't seem to disable this.

Whenever I disable Books in the System Preferences under iCloud and leave that preferences panel, it's enabled again when I open the iCloud panel again.

What's going on? Is there another setting somewhere which I have to disable in addition?

(macOS 14.5 Sonoma, if that matters.)

I am also having the same issue and I believe it is a bug in Books. It may help if you report it to Apple at Feedback - Books - Apple. The same problem used to be on iOS but it seems fixed now, at least for me Books on my iPhone does not keep reenabling the iCloud sync.
