Can't disable Photos People?!

My machine has been chugging away trying to identify People since I installed Sierra on Tuesday. We have 80,000+ photos.

Seriously Apple - you were too lazy to put in a simple preference to not use People or Memories?!? I don't want to use them.....thanks but no thanks.

I'm getting tired of Apple dumbing down every app on both platforms to the point where we as a user have NO control.

You can't turn it off. You can always not store your photos in the photos app if it bothers you that much. It's an optional service. Anyways it won't do that indefinitely. Just like one night (when it's not in use) of that until it's gone through each one. So it doesn't really have much affect on you after install night. Which is why they don't have an option to turn it off.

Don't get me wrong - the People process is only mildly annoying, and I know it will go away once it completes. To me it's more the principle of Apple forcing these options on people. I'm not asking for a million preferences to change every little thing in an app. But c'mon - if I don't want to use the feature, shouldn't a simple preference toggle be easy enough to put in? Same as the Photos app on iOS. I have no desire or need for Moments or People. Just give me an option to not use them.

Slowly Apple is pushing me to 3rd party alternatives both on iOS and macOS.

there's no harm in an alternative app, but you're choosing to make your life difficult; what happens when the OS updates? at some point, your workaround may not work. the new app is great (to me), i don't miss iphoto at all. anyway, whatever works...
