I'm on MacOS 11.3 on my MacBook Air 2020 M1 and I'm unable to disable the "Play sound on startup" preference in the Sounds System Preferences. Any time I uncheck box, go out of the Sound preferences and back in, it's checked. If I uncheck it and restart the Mac while still in the preferences, the sound still plays on startup and the box is checked when the Mac boots back up.

I'm pretty sure this was disabled before updating to 11.3 (though I'm not sure about that since I rarely restart my M1, but I don't recall hearing the sound until the past few days). Is this just broken or is there a way to disable the startup sound?

According to this article, "M1 processor tests NVRAM when the computer is started from shutdown (i.e. not after a normal reboot)", meaning, the startup sound setting might not be updated or something (I'm almost sure it's stored in NVRAM).
So, try Shutdown>Power Up. Or read the article, there's an idea of how to "reset" the NVRAM on M1 Mac (it seems, you cannot do that as you could with Intels).

I did some digging and it looks like Apple broke something with 11.3 regarding that setting on M1 Macs. It is stuck how it was prior to installing 11.3, so if it was off, you can’t turn it on and if it was on, you can’t turn it off.

I apparently had it on, but because of a different bug the start up sound never worked. I guess Apple fixed that, but broke the setting.

This one is interesting as one guy ended up with 2 StartupMute nvram settings, one permanent and the other he could change. He had the box unchecked so he had StartUpMute=%01 set in nvram and he can’t change or delete it now. I can add StartUpMute=%01, but it doesn’t do anything.

Any updates on this? Yesterday I called Apple Support, the agent wasn't able to solve the issue and redirected me to her senior, and he was also unable to understand why, told me that he'll call me back today after doing some research. It seems like a bug but I don't know why few people are talking about it. Is it affecting only some computers or most people enjoy it or just don't notice since they don't shutdown/restart much? Cause normally I wouldn't probably notice either if I wasn't migrating from my old laptop and reinstalling the OS.

Nothing specifically. I had a call back from a senior Apple support person for a different issue and mentioned it to her. I also submitted it as a bug through the Feedback applications.

Confirming the same issue on a Mac Mini M1. Can't turn off the start up sound. Guess it's a bug then.

I definitely have the issue, too. I uncheck the box, close Preferences, return and it's checked again. Geez, Apple, how do you manage to break stuff like this?

Is there an official bug-report site or likewise at Apple? Like some Linux distributions have?

http://feedbackassistant.apple.com or you can use the app built-in to MacOS by pasting applefeedback:// into Safari.

They also have a feedback page.

I’ve found I don’t get a response to either method. The only way I’ve found to report bugs and get status on them is by calling Apple Support.

Yes, I was more thinking of an official site confirming current bug's

Apple doesn’t publicly list known bugs. Many times they don’t privately list them either so even their support team doesn’t know about them.
