OK, I have been searching for 2 hours and can't find a solution. I'm trying to upgrade my 2G to 3.0 with redsn0w but I can't seem to download the 3.0 firmware. (Or more accurately, I can download it, but it doesn't seem to be the right type of file. I have tried 10 different links including iClarified, Apple, and many from MR).

This is what happened: I download the file and it is a zip file of 229MB titled: "iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip."

Once it has downloaded, it decompresses and becomes a folder titled: iPhone1,1_3. Inside there are 3 .dmg files, few .plist, and a folder titled: firmware. (see photo).

The problem is, I download the 3.0 file but it doesn't contain a .ipsw file. Looking at iClarified, it doesn't look like I can upgrade without this file...

Am I missing a step?

It's not the download links that are to blame, it's your browser.
In Safari's Preferences > General > de-select the 'Open safe files after downloading" option.
Don't decompress the file. Just delete the ".zip" part and you'll get your proper .ipsw file.

PS: check your Trash to see if the downloaded iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip file is there, to save you re-downloading it.

Thanks. I used firefox to download and it is now working.
