Can't drop music into iPhone

so i put my iphone into the dock and it shows up correctly in itunes. it can sync address book and everything. but when i drag and drop music (either purchased from itunes store or my own) onto the iphone, it doesn't let me drop it. the cursor doesn't turn into that green plus sign when i do it to the ipod. am i doing something wrong? thanks!

edit: so syncing a playlist works. the mp3s are added. but i just can't add them manually...

That is working as designed at present. What I've done to load up my iphone is make an smart playlist named iphone playlist that has "Comment must be 'phone' " as the criteria and I just sync the one playlist. I sort everything by album and artist anyway, so it works well for me

That seems like a lot of trouble because you have to go and edit the comments of all the music you want.

Why not create a playlist called iphone, and drag all the music to it. Only sync the iphone with that playlist. Simple and easy.

I've synced the playlists I want, at least some for now, but one quirk is that when you are in a playlist or in the music videos section and you go landscape it brings up coverflow for all your iPhone music, not just that playlist or just videos. But when you rotate back you are in that particular area again.

On a site note I took all the contacts I wanted for my iPhone in address book (Mac) and made a group called iPhone. I also then made groups called: Friends, Family, Freqs, & Biz (places I call to order food a lot or things like that). You have access to those groups in the contacts. When in all contacts in the upper left it says groups, and you can then select one of those smaller groups instead of searching through your contacts. Helpful as your contacts list grows.

I use smart playlists to organize my library, so I can go through and select the artists and songs I want all at once and do a mass edit to add the comment. It isn't as time consuming as it sounds

... but you could go through and select all the artists and songs you want, and then drag them all at once to the playlist. So basically do what you are already doing, except when you are done selecting, just drag and drop rather than edit. What you are doing requires iTunes to attach metadata to every single music file you select for absolutely no reason. In my experience, this also is a very slow process.
