I want to update my cMP 5,1 to Mojave so I got a Visiontek rx480 off of eBay. Thought it was an 8 pin since it's an 'overclocked edition', but it turns out it's a 6 pin. to be safe I still plan on powering it with both mini 6 pins.

It doesn't look like the 6 pin to dual mini 6 pin splitter cable is readily available. I found one on eBay, but it might take two months to get here from China. Figure they're effectively extinct now

I'm assuming I can just get the common 8 pin splitter and Dremel off the two extra ground pins and effectively have a 6 pin cable. Failing that, I guess there's probably some combo of 6 pin M - F splitters/adapters to get an equivalent, but somehow a chain of multiple cables seems worse? I'm not very knowledgeable about the intricacies of GPUs so I wanted to ask here first.

That card has a TDP of 150W so there's no need for more than a single 6 pin. They wouldn't have manufactured it that way if it required more power than a 6 pin can provide.

RX480 is know to damage Mac Pro backplanes. Please read about the problems of the reference model when AMD released it.

I removed the PCIe 6-pin from a PC PSU, then replaced the 8-pin connector from dual mini-PCIe 6-pin to 8-pin cable.

This is the pin-out:

True but isn't that an issue with the power draw from the PCIe slot not the 6 pin? Also I thought It was patched a while back?
