I need to jailbreak with redsnow, but can't find the ipsw

You have downloaded the firmware from iTunes? location would be users/library/itunes... can't quite remember as i haven't got my Mac with me but should be easy to locate?

Ok. So I have two Iphones and a macbook. One I updated to 3.0 and Itunes said it downloaded it and updated it (and it is in fact updated). When I go to redsn0w, I hit browse, I can't find the 3.0 update anywhere. Not under user>me>library>itunes. It's not anywhere. I even used spotlight and searched for iphone1,2_3..... and nothing will pop up. When I plug in the other iphone, I only get 'install update/not now' when attempting to update instead of the three 'not now/download/download and install'. My computer has the 3.0 obviously because the second iphone tells me to download where as the first iphone gave me three choices (I hit download and install).

So I've been looking online to get the 3.0 update and everywhere I go it is a zip file. When it's done downloading, it says decompressing zip and gives me a folder with a few dmg's, a few folders with a bunch of different stuff, and some text files. My zip opener is 'stuffit expander' i think.

Can anyone help me with my problem? Sorry if that is confusing, but basically, I just need to be able to find 3.0 on my computer to use with redsn0w to jailbreak/unlock both phones.

Just download it through iTunes.

I don't understand why people don't just download it using iTunes. It's right there.

just a note im having mega troubles with a downloaded ISPW because i must of downloaded a US version and im in the UK, so make sure you get the right one

I don't think its that hard to download through itunes. But I was only given the option once. I plugged in my first iphone and got the three options. "A new update is available for your iphone. would you like to: download, download and install, not now". I clicked download and install. So I downloaded it through itunes. Ta-da. My problem is that my computer cannot find it. I used spotlight to search for the ipsw that itunes had just downloaded and I can only find. 2.2.1 which is useless because I want 3.0. I need the actual file so I can use redsn0w to unlock it. I searched the itunes store and I could only find the 3.0 update for ipod touch where you have to buy it for 10 bucks.

Ok. What the heck. I searched in that folder and I searched EVERYWHERE for that stupid file. I ended up finding a torrent and that one worked just fine. Then you post that and I go look at it and its there. FML Thank you.

I had the same problem. I updated my iPhone to 3.0 firmware and use Redsnow to JB it. I couldn't find the 3.0 firmware anywhere in my Mac. It's got to be there but it's not. I google it and download the zip files you were talking about but it's not working then i found iclarified and they have 3.0 firmware there.

You people should just tell him where to get the 3.0 firmware because it's obvious that he downloaded through iTunes but couldn't find it in his computer.

Edit: rspy is right. I checked that location and that's where iTunes saves the firmware. I tried using spotlight too but it doesn't show up.

The long and short of this is anytime you install anything on a Mac, it DL's the file. It's somewhere.

Just have to use that brain and figure out the most logical places to look.

iTunes stores everything in a couple different places on the Mac.

Next time search for folders "iTunes" and thouroughly search each of the folders.

Guessing that you're using safari to download? If so, make sure 'Open "safe" files is unchecked. Either that or use Firefox. That should solve your issue.

By default, spotlight won't include system files in it's searches... However, you can tweak spotlight. More is here and here.. You're welcome bud, hope more info helps :)

Solution found

I too had an issue trying to find the .ipsw file after upgrading via iTunes... I even downloaded the package seperately from iHackintosh and iClarified and both were zip files that did not contain the .ipsw file.

Long story short...rename the downloaded .zip to .ipsw and it works perfectly...just jailbroke my iphone 3g!!

New.. Frustrated.. please help

Hi I am having the same problem. I have tried the above and cant find the IPSW files. I just brought a brand new 3gs. My mac already had Itunes 8.2. I wanted to jail break it to T-mobile. I have looked in the directory.. I get Itunes then I tunes plug-ins ... and thats it. I never had to download the 3.0 software. I have customised spotlight to search for IPSW - no joy. I even changed the file extension from .zip to .IPSW . I am REALLY stuck please help!!

1st, Redsn0w won't work on a 3GS
2nd, As you said, since you never updated the firmware thru iTunes, the IPSW has never been downloaded to your computer
3rd, see #1

What should i do if i can't find the 3.0 software anywhere on my computer? I've looked at the itunes folder, and found the "3.0 software update" folder, but nothings inside.
._.

I almost never tamper with those files, and i dont think i have moved it anywhere. Is it something to do with me using Vista?

itunes hides almost everything when it deals with the "internal software components" of devices such as the iphone (at least on windows).

i used to have the same problem when i had my thinkpad and i had to show hidden files or folders.

Another problem I've had with ipsw files is that when I download the files with Safari, the are downloaded as xxxx.ipsw.zip files and once downloading is completed, they are unzipped and are left as folders. Even if you zip them back up and change the file extension to .ipsw, they are not recognized by redsnow or pwned. I had to download the files using Firefox which downloaded them perfectly as .ipsw files.

Thanks for finally telling them where to look.
There is a thread with this question on every page of this forum.
I don't understand how some can be having SO MUCH TROUBLE finding a file.

After all, every computer operating system I have ever used has a search function. Even if they don't know the full file name, they can get the numbers from the Settings/General/About page in their phone (7A341) and that is sufficient to find the file.

Just tried it on my Mac and using the 5 characters ONLY, it found the file in less than a second !

I think you can drag it (Zip file) back out of Trash and remove the .zip file extention and it will also be in tact.
It's a dirty way of doing it but works if you don't care to search like mentioned above.
