I don't use the Books app that often, but I decided to download the latest ones that cover iOS 14 (plus update some old guides, like Final Cut Pro).

They don't open. The cover page comes up, but then they become completely unresponsive. When I look at the library, the corresponding book to what I'm trying to open has the spinning symbol on it. I have to quit Books to get it to stop.

The rub is these seem to be the only books affected. My free books open. My paid books open (even one that I updated). Just these user guides seem to be affected. And most of my old guides update when I click to open them rendering them unresponsive when they do.

Anybody have an idea what might be happening?

That does seem odd. I just tested this by downloading that same iPadOS 14 User Guide on my iPad Pro and it opens just fine. When I looked at the Guides page, only some of the guides denote they're available for Apple Books, which this one is. Can you open it on your iPad? Do the web versions open on your Mac? Which macOS version are you running?

I just tried it on my iPhone X iOS 14. Opens without issue. I have no trouble looking at the web versions on Apple.com. My iMac is a 5k 2017 running the latest Catalina version. Do you know what folder holds these? Is it different than other books? I’m trying to grasp at what may be the differentiating factor. So far it’s every updated manual I’ve tried, but none of the regular books, paid or free, that I’ve tried.

When I tried the iPad user guide again on my iMac after I opened it on the iPhone, it lost its new tag but still exhibited the same issue.

I tried a really old user manual for iPhone iOS 8, which apparently does not update automatically to the latest version, and that opened fine. It seems to be only newly downloaded user guides or ones that get updated from Apple with the current version (and so would also be newly downloaded, as well), like the Final Cut Pro one.

Thanks for the reply. There didn't deem to be anything unusual about the file (not that I necessarily know what to look for). I tried deleting it inside the app. I tried deleting the file from the folder, then telling the trash to permanently delete the file. I tried restarting the computer. Nothing has worked. If you can think of something else, let me know.
