Hello!
just got a replacement iphone 2g due to a faulty touchscreen. I am trying to find out which firmware that is installed but for some weird reason i cant get into field mode through *3001#12345#*. cant activate it either since i dont have a valid sim. Are there other ways to find out firmware? need to know so that i can unlock and jailbrake using quickpwn.

TIA

*3001#12345#* does not (as far as I know) tell you the firmware anyway.

As it's an iPhone 2G (not 3G) and you need to unlock won't you need to jailbreak via PwnageTool anyway (as QuickPwn doesn't unlock AFAIK)? I had assumed that YellowSn0w would only unlock iPhone 3Gs so for 2Gs you still needed the PwnageTool method? If so why not just make yourself a new 2.2 firmware via PwnageTool and restore to it as usual?

ok! I see. thanks, sounds interesting. as i am kinda new to this whole iphone hacking scene i've had a hard time separating different methods and tools as i have read many tuts.

However i was under the impression that I needed to download the approriate firmware (.ipsw) corresponding to the one that is installed on the iphone. and since i cant find out which version that is installed i didnt dare to run any unlock-tools.
I also thought that quickpwn both unlocked and jailbroke. the actual unlocking is my main goal right now.

btw, i am on a pc running xp. dont shoot me...

Just upgrade to the latest firmware via iTunes, use winpwn to jailbreak the phone and then once jailbroken use Cydia to install bootnueter to unlock the phone. Bootnueter is installed via Cydia, which jailbreaking will install, under sections - utilities.

Very easy to do.

sounds pretty easy. the problem is that i cant upgrade since the phone wont show up in itunes, needs to be activated... thats the step where i am stuck... dont know in which end to start.

Here's what you do:

1) Download 2.2.

2) Build your custom firmware using PwnageTool (leave out Installer.)

3) Put the phone into DFU mode.

4) Restore the firmware to the phone.

Simple, no?

Not sure about simple... step 3 is pretty hard when you're a newbie, when I was new to the iPhone it took me ages to get it right. Thankfully I seem to recall PwnageTool hand-holds you through it :)

thanks everyone! i'll try that solution. and i do know how to put the phone in DFU mode.

sorry to bother you guys again with my "noob" questions. but i recall pwnagetool (or as in this case winpwn) only supports firmwares up to 2.0.2.
then again, i can be wrong. is it still possible to build a 2.2 CFW with the above method?
otherwise, will itunes be able to install the original 2.2 FW while in DFU mode and then use quickpwn?

Not sure about WinPwn but I've just (as in about 30 minutes ago) used the latest release of PwnageTool (version 2.2.1) to build a custom 2.2 firmware including unlock for an iPhone 2G.

QuickPwn will not unlock the phone, and I don't think it will activate it either (two things you will need). If you can activate it then you can use BootNeuter (via Cydia) to unlock the phone, but I suspect that without a legit SIM card or PwnageTool (which uses BootNeuter to unlock the phone witout you needing to get involved) you will not be able to activate it.

i don't want to be a wiseguy but as far as i know pwnagetool is only available for MAC. And since i am on a pc, as stated in my second pos, i can only use the windows equivalent, Quickpwn. I did some more reading and it is only pwnagetool of the two that can actually make custom FWs...
i really appreciate your help but i must say i am a bit lost here..

What's wrong with WinPwn?
