Can't get Java to work :(

Hi,

Since I have purchased my new MacBook Air earlier this year, I'm struggling to get a lot of java apps to work. Some do some don't, including web based apps. Web apps just crash (close), and .jar files gives me the error:

The Java JAR file "whatever java app.jar" could not be launched.
Check the console for possible messages.

The following messages appear in the console:

02/12/2012 11:09:26.285 com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.qtkittrustedmoviesservice[557]) Could not terminate job: 3: No such process
02/12/2012 11:09:26.285 com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.qtkittrustedmoviesservice[557]) Using fallback option to terminate job...

I have java installed because I can see it in system settings and when I click it, it says my system has the recommended version of Java (Java 7 Update 9).

I have all the latest updates for OS X 10.8.2.

Any help would be appreciated

If java is not working get a 5 hour shoot or switch the coffee to mocha

Open a terminal window and, at the prompt, enter the following:
java -version

Hit return and copy the response here.

You may want to check the Java Preferences control panel. It seems a bit odd that you're getting this version info, though, because 1.7.0_06 is too new to be Apple-provided (they only provide a Java 6 runtime), and too old to be a current download from Oracle (who are shipping 1.7.0_09).

I think Apple removed it with 10.8.2. It's missing for me too.

It's now in System Preferences, under "Other". Open that, and go to the "Updates" tab. What does it say? See my screenshots for what should be the current version.

In any case, I recommend downloading the full Java development kit, which should update everything to the current version, rather than just the java runtime. Go here:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7u9-downloads-1859576.html
and download the Mac OS X file (jdk-7u9-macosx-x64.dmg), and install. Hopefully that will solve your problem.

Did you try installing the jdk that I linked to above? I think that will solve your problems.

Have you tried logging into a different User Account, if you don't have one create one, then log into that user account and see if it works there.

You could also try to install OS X on a USB stick, boot from it install Java and see if it works there.

Oh, and repair permissions.

Reinstalling OS X done the job, thanks for all your help
