No matter what I try, barring a live sacrifice, i can't appease the Apple Gods to let me get passed the backup window in iTunes. I've downloaded and redownloaded the Ipsw files and restarted pc and phone countless times. I'm on 7 hours here with same problem.

I'm a beaten down apple fanboy. I'm off to bed with my head down and no iOS 5 :(

I will try again tomorrow...

Please post any tips for me to read when I wake up in two hours and try again. Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. Error -48. I have deleted, retried multiple times. It's just not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

well, I don't know if this will help but...
when I was trying to install iOS 5, a message error appear saying that I didn't have enough hard drive space to perform a backup... have you checked if that's what is happening to you?

I know it is stupid but one comment to help is better than no comment at all.

Thanks for the tip. I did check that. I have 28gb free and I'm using a 16gb iPhone. It's also a VZW iPhone 4 16gb if that helps.

Don't know about the other person but that's not my problem. I was able to update to update my iPad this morning (after 4 hours). Saw that I needed Lion to run iCloud. I went ahead and updated to Lion but had to re-download iTunes again. It was after I updated to Lion and re-downloaded iTunes that I tried to update my phone. It's definitely not working uses the fixes suggested on the Apple site.
