I searched but could not find the specific answer.

I have a mid 2010 Mac Mini (OS X 10.10) so I already know handoff/continuity will not work as it does not have BT4.0

I have an iPhone 5s and iPad 4 (Both on 8.1) and today while at home a regular came in. And to my surprise my Mac Mini was ringing along with my iPad/iPhone.

I thought macs that didn't have BT 4.0 could not do this?? I understand if it was a FaceTime Audio call, but it was not.

TIA

"Handoff" requires Bluetooth (Bluetooth LE, I believe). Phone calls and SMS are "Continuity" and no BlueTooth is required.

Phone calls do not = my mac alerts when a call is coming in but will not pick up the call. It will also not start a call

Ahh. I did have some 'Call failed' errors when first setting up, but they went away without any action on my part (as far as I know). The only thing I did that helped with SMS setup was to make sure that the Apple IDs/email addresses/phone numbers in Accounts were all consistent.

(and by that I just mean that I had checked (or not checked) all the entries consistently across my devices)

I am in the same boat. I have a late 2013 iMac and every time I try to make a call from my mac it fails. When my wife calls me it rings my iPad but not my iMac. I've searched the web but can not figure this one out.

Make sure in the FaceTime settings that you have your iCloud ID checked. That was my problem for a while.

It has been checked the entire time so that is not the problem. This seems to be a common problem from reading through other threads though.
