I ported my number over from my old carrier, it took almost 20 hours to switch over. Now four hours after the port finally went through I am still unable to get text messages from other carriers. I can however get message from other iPhone on at & t network.

Anybody had same problem or have any suggestions?

no..but

I can't get any SMS messages at all, other than ones automatically sent out by AT&T welcoming me. can't send or receive, even from within the network on another iphone. will probably wait til monday to call and figure out what's wrong. spent over an hour on the phone with AT&T today to finally get this far in activation, not anxious to do that again.

post if you come up with a resolution.

Still no text messages!

I am getting really upset. Despite my number finally porting over I'm still unable to get any text messages to my phone!

It's been 35+ hours since it went through but still no text. I have talked to AT & T and they put me onto Apple. Apple had me reset my iPhone then had to go through reactivation hell! It was like iTunes had no record of me ever using this phone!

If anybody here has SMS service besides AT & T please send me a text to <snip #> and let me see if I can get anything from other carriers!

Redundant, but here's my issues:

It's been a very long weekend, but I'll spare repeating all of the horror stories that have been posed elsewhere ad nauseum.

I finally got activated (can send and receive calls). However, I now find that:

[1] I can seemingly send SMS Text messages (i.e. no error messages are received); however, no one ever receives the messages (this is true for AT&T and non AT&T customers). I also dont receive any messages either (and yes, I have SMS messages in my plan).

I read elsewhere that the mobile phone numbers in your contact list need a "1" before the phone number to send text messages. I tried added a 1 to my "textable" contacts", but that didn't change the above behavior.

[2] When I tap the voicemail icon on the phone screen, the phone starts dialing the number to retrieve voicemails -- there is no visual voicemail or setup screen for it. (I have a friend who also has an iPhone and I can see that his phone has the visual voicemail stuff).

I set up my password (via the regular dial-up voicemail number), then power-cycled my phone. But to no avail...

I've read in posts elsewhere that the visual voicemail and SMS issues are interrelated. Do you have visual voicemail working?

FWIW, I finally got my issue (no text messages or visual voicemail) fixed.

After hours on hold with with customer "service" representatives from AT&T, it was determined that no data plan was associated with my account. Once that was rectified, everything worked. (Even though "no data plan was associated with my account" I always had access to the EDGE data network for internet and email access).

Why it took AT&T this long to figure out such a simple problem is pretty freaky. I can easily distinguish between the "Apple" and "AT&T" parts of my iPhone (thereby not tarnishing Apple's image in my mind). Unfortunately, for Apple, think this might not be the case for many...

I was having the same problem and this is the solution that ATT gave me after being on the line with tech support for 2 hours

For anyone that needs to send you a text that's not on the ATT network (if they are on ATT they can just send the regular way) they have to send a text to you like this:

xxx-xxx-xxxx@mobile.mycingular.com replace x's with your iPhone #. It worked for me.

Hope this helps you out.

Well, that will pretty much guarantee that you wont be getting any text messages from non-AT&T friends....

Yes, I wasn't really happy about that, but now everything is working like it should, finally :)

It seemed that might have just been a temporary fix. Maybe becasue it was a new acccount, I don't know, but I glad I can send and receive text like my old phone. Now my iPhone is perfect :D
