When you say not fully working: what do you mean? What are the symptoms?

I would start over with a clean install of OS X. Otherwise it is very difficult to determine what is wrong. Then apply TheITSage's recommended edits.

Possible you may never able to make it work. XFX is a known brand that Mac users should avoid. It seems that they often make non-standard / customised PCB, which cannot work properly under MacOS.

Anyway, no matter the RX480 work or not, it should not affect you OS update. If you can't even make the OS update work, there should be something wrong. As Gazember suggest, you better start from clean configuration. For OS stuff, there is no point to spend time to diagnosis. If that is not an option due to any other reason. At least perform a full OS installation but not just update. Which should keep all your user files and settings.
