I have a brand new iMac and I am brand new to Mac OS so I am sure the issue is me rather than the equipment.

The issue is I shoot in Raw, I use Lightroom classic

When I import I plug in my sd card and send it through the usb.

I let Lightroom tell what folder because I really don't know how Mac handles raw files. Lightroom sent it to "pictures" in a dated folder

I click import and all files import fine, but as soon as their done importing they become color bars and 1,4 pictures with all sorts of white diagonal lines through the rest of the picture.

I deleted the whole import and tried again, same thing.

I made my own folder on the desktop labeled it RAW and just downloaded the files directly from the SD card through USB and into the file I just created.
They download fine and when I open the file in the iMac app "Photos" they all appear fine (I guess photos has a raw converter?)

I then try import into Lightroom from MY file and then the files are broken again.

Whats going on here is it Lightroom.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

On edit; just tried a different sd card and same thing. These are quality cards also.

You seem to have stumbled upon a solution:
"I made my own folder on the desktop labeled it RAW and just downloaded the files directly from the SD card through USB and into the file I just created.

Fishrrman's advice:
When one finds "a way that works", stop beating your head against the wall trying to travel a way that doesn't.

Go with what works for you...
(even if a few extra steps are involved. Once you get the "workflow" down, it will become routine)

I always import to a folder on my desktop first, then cull any images that I don't want to process and delete them before then importing the images I intend to work on right into Aperture (I am still using Aperture even though Apple no longer distributes or supports it). When I eventually settle on another editing program I will continue to do the initial importing process the same way I've been doing, with the folder on the desktop method, as I prefer not to dump everything into the editing program straightaway.

Like you, I have a new iMac (2 weeks old), shoot RAW and use Lightroom Classic but have had no problems importing (using an external USB 3.0 card reader) and displaying the photos. The fact that the process works when you don't involve Lightroom into the workflow leads me to think that it is a Lightroom issue. Did you disable Lightroom on your prior computer(s) as you are allowed only licenses for 2 devices, which include tablets, phones or however/wherever else you access Lightroom. If that is not the cause maybe you have a corrupted copy of Lightroom and need to uninstall/reinstall the program.

Good luck.
