Hi Room, new to Mac Iv got a iMac late 2009 on High Sierra and trying to install Paltalk , but it won't install ,,,any ideas ???

Please look on their website here. It states that only 10.5 (Catalina) or above is supported. High Sierra is 10.3.

Just had a look and your right it does not support High Sierra 10.3, Is there a workaround ?

Your iMac is 13 yrs old and you're already running the latest supported OS. This in itself makes it security compromised. Yes, there are workarounds available such as this but bear in mind that:

1. There's always something that can break the stability of the OS along the way.
2. Not recommended if it's your only computer with important data on it.
3. If you're running 32bit Apps, 10.14 Mojave is the last OS to support those. 10.15 onward only supports 64bit.

There's a wealth of information regarding this subject on MR. Only you will know if that's a step you're willing to take for the sake of running this App.

Is Mojave 32 bit only?
It's not like that. Apple's own Apps have run 64bit for ever now but it's the 32bit support for 3rd party SW that is no longer. Initially, High Sierra was meant to be the last OS to support 32bit. But I believe that support remained with Mojave also, albeit with Apple forewarning that some Apps may not run as intended. So effectively there was fair warning to the Devs to port their Apps to 64bit.

To check what Apps are 32bit or 64bit on your system you can navigate to:

About This Mac>System Report>Software>Applications

Ok, Great Info,
As you say if I was to upgrade to Catalina and it opened and started to install, then it became unstable during the install would I still have High Sierra to fall back on from the hard drive ?

You are always advised to have sufficient backups!!! One external HDD/SSD perhaps running Time Machine, the other a 1:1 bootable clone using either Super Duper or CCC of your High Sierra install.

Note: The Cat patcher will require a reformat to the APFS file system, this works best with the boot volume residing on a SSD. I do not know what you have currently installed on your machine.

Another alternative to this patcher is OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

There is a dedicated long (600 pages+) running thread about this very topic here.

Yea Great INFO ... and looking at the topic site to ,,,
As a redirect , Whats the set up to run a Win on the Mac?

Whats the set up to run a Win on the Mac?

I've never done so as never had the need to do so. From what I understand though it boils down to using:

Virtual Machine- i.e. Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion- Emulation software that mimics hardware of a Windows PC and enables running alongside your mac OS. For the best user experience however it is suggested to have adequate processing power, memory and storage to begin with. You are effectively running two OS's together.

Boot Camp- This App should actually be included in your Applications folder, less resource hungry than VM but you will need to boot into either macOS or Windows, which ever is required at the time. The Boot Camp Assistant should guide you through the installation effortlessly.

No big surprises, there's also a specific Forum dedicated to running Windows on your mac here. Perhaps scan some of the applicable posts there and/ or start a thread what the best solution for your needs and your current hardware may be.

Edit: Boot Camp Assistant resides in Applications>Utilities or just open directly via Spotlight search.

Hi, Just a we update, I watched the links you sent me and they are very easy to follow, Great Video and very self explanatory So last weekend i installed Catalina and all is going well, haven't found any issues with it so all is good and iv had a update to it. Its nice that this machine has a new lease of life as its still good to work on.I take it that the main change to Catalina is that it supports 64 bit apps and a few other things that iv seen in launchpad, but the setup and principle and overall look of it is very similar to High Sierra unless there's a few tweeks i haven't found yet ?

@mac007007007 great to hear it's working well. I'm not sure as I jumped from 10.11 (last supported) to 10.15, mainly for synching with iOS. This for me got broken in Safari at a later stage again.

I would also urge you to keep that bootable installation copy of Catalina handy. Some months ago there was a graphics update that prevented the internal fully booting, leaving many with a problem. Luckily I still had the usb drive install to boot into the patch updater and un-select the offending issue.
