Can't install RAM in new PB, driving me mad!!

Hi all,

I am new to macs and have got a new PB, 15". I have purchased 512mb of additional ram, I got it from crucial instead of from apple..as advised by forum members it was much cheaper. The problem is, I cannot install the RAM! It is driving me crazy, I have tried so many times, following the instructions exactly. I even believed that the RAM may be faultly and sent it back to Crucial, but there was no problem with it. I tried again today for the first time in a while, and really am at my wits end. I attach a picture, can anyone see anything obviously wrong?

If not, does anyone have any ideas? Do apple resellers fit ram (uk)?

It just looks to me like you haven't pushed hard enough. As the instructions no doubt say, insert the RAM at a low angle and push it all the way in. You shouldn't be able to see much, if any, of the gold connectors visible once it's been pushed in. You generally do have to push harder than you think you should, but that's to ensure that the RAM doesn't come loose over time. Once it's inserted, then you can flip it down into the horizontal position under the tabs and close it back up.

From your picture it seems that the RAM just isn't in far enough. You do need to use a good deal of pressure to get the chip in fully (though not too much, you don't want to break it), there is a fine line there. I included a snap-shot from my powerbooks RAM slot to show you how far it needs to go in.

Make sure you push it in on an angle, then push it downward to lock it in place. You may have to push hard, but not too hard. It looks like its going in correctly, so you're not putting it in backwards. Just exert some force on it and then it should go in and then push it downward to secure it in place.

I experienced it just the way you do when I put RAM in my PB - I was scared to push hard enough. The other posters are exactly right, you just need to push it in at an angle and use more force than you feel comfortable with.

Everyone here is correct. I'll say it again in slightly different words:

I suspect you are attempting to install the RAM flat... which is not the way.

You need to insert the connector edge of the module while the module is raised at approx. a 30 degree angle. While it is still at 30 degrees, use both thumbs on the top edge of the module and push the connectors into the socket with moderate force. THEN pivot the RAM down to the flat position and click it into the holders.

This is the #1 cause of RAM "failure" in iBooks and Powerbooks, because the sockets are quite tight.

I had a piece of ibook powerbook ram Infineon brand -- that actually would NOT fit into the ibook's slot because it was too FAT on one end. Both Infineon pieces were the same way -- I bought 1 gig for two iBooks I had. The company took them back for me.

Point is, I could NOT push the ram into the slot, no matter how much pressure I used. I almost broe the logic board. Make sure it slips in there easily.

Insert memory at a 25-30 degree angle into the socket until it clicks. Then push down past the metal brackets until it clicks again. Sometimes, even after that, there are parts of the connector showing, so you might try wiggling it a little further into the socket once it's been laid flat.

Yea inserting memory for the first time feels liek you are going to snap something. After the first time you do it, it wont seem as bad.
