I have a 16gb jailbrokn iphone software version 1.1.4. I went to the most recent iphone tutorial on iclarified.com to upgrade to the 2.1 software using the 2-1-1 version of quickpwn. I followed all directions (the pictures make it a no brainer) and I had two problems. When I hit shift and restore it starts to restore but then gives me the message "iphone could not be restored. Unkown error occured (5)". My iphone then displayed a itunes disc with the usb cord. I continued to follow the directions and tried to use quickpwn. My iphone went back to the original way I had it and then gave me the message "quickpwn can only jailbreak with versions >= 2.0" Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong and how to correct it?

You need to update to the 2.1 software first, using iTunes.

Keep in mind that you will lose any jailbroken apps when you do this, so take note of what you have, so that you can download and install them again.

If you're the paranoid type, you may also want to copy your SMS and Notes files in case you need to restore. That way, you can SSH them back in and not lose your history in those items.

tried to update through itunes

I tried to update through itunes first but I got this message "an error occured while backing up this phone (-43) Would you like to continue to update this phone without backup? Continuing without backup will result in the loss of all contents on this phone" I am worried if I do this I will not be able to get all my contacts back. I'm don't know how to sync them. Will doing this erase my contacts?

Your contacts, music, photos, bookmarks, and email are all stored on your computer. So if you decide not to backup, all you have to do is re-sync and all of your stuff will be right back on your phone.

So heres what you do:

1. Make sure you have iTunes 8
2. plug in your phone and hit restore
3. choose not to back up
4. Now you have 2.1 firmware on your phone
5. re-sync all of your personal info, contacts, music etc...
6. Back up your phone
7. Jailbreak

Hope this helps

EDIT: I forgot to mention that you WILL actually lose text messages, recent calls, and notes with this method.

If you would like to keep your SMS data, save a copy of it from your phone before running the update, and then SSH it back into your phone after re-jailbreaking.

It's stored here:

Var/Mobile/Library/SMS

You can do the same with Notes as well:

Var/Mobile/Library/Notes
