Can't jailbreak 3GS

i bought my iPhone about 2 weeks ago and have been trying since then to get it jailbroken. tried blackra1n and pwnage tool, neither work.

i am on OSX. i tried XP pro also but blackra1n wont work on XP.

both programs function as if they worked then when they do the final reboot they go into recovery mode and itunes says i have to restore the phone.

i have itunes set to not sync when connected.

what are some other things i can try?

my phone serial is 949, i know ill be tethered if i can get this done at all....

i really want multitasking as ive switched from the Palm Pre to the iPhone so thats really the only function i want from jailbreaking, if i could buy an app from the iStore to do so i would and call it a day, but alast im stuck trying to hack the phone to make it work and i cant get the hacking done!!

yes you have a tethered jailbreak if the 4th and 5th numbers of your serial number are past 39 or 40. so yes you have one. i recommend not jailbreaking it until another iboot exploit comes out. for now if u do jailbreak it, when you run blackra1n and it goes into recovery or dfu mode, dont restore, quit itunes, and quit and reopen blackra1n. make it rain again. your iphone should boot. if you turn off your iphone you will have to do this every time to turn it back on. *PLEASE NOTE* THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! IF AN EMERGENCY EVER HAPPENED WHERE YOU NEEDED YOUR PHONE AND IT WAS OFF, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE IT. YOU WONT BE ABLE TO USE IT TO CALL 911 EITHER! Ok, check into hotel reality now. I have not had to turn off my i in months, so I think you'll be ok jailbreaking it. You can try what ol yeller above told you to do to try and get it to jb. Good luck.

OMG, how did people cope 30 or more years ago!!! people before the 80's must have been constantly living in fear at their lack of mobile calls!!
Im really glad we don't live in such DANGEROUS times.

back then? i still dont have a mobile phone, i just carry a mini mac in my pocket to email, surf the web on, and listen to music with.... does this thing have a phone feature i can unlock after jailbreaking too!?!??!


but he was right, thank you! after making it rain, you have to make it rain AGAIN for it finalize. all is good now, well other then the fact that i wont be able to call 911 WITH A DEAD PHONE!!!!!!!

Of course he is right, there has been a thread started on this subject every day!(which you could have looked at) i just think his mini-rant on tethering safety was funny.
and like you said, If your phone is just plain dead you cant call 911, and if you have time to charge it up you are probably 1. safe, and 2. have access to a landline.

p.s. your phone shouldn't have to be re-unlocked unless you restore. Just booted up with blackra1n

Hysterical much? I also like how you know what whoever discovers the next exploit will call it even before its been discovered, not taking at all into account that the 24kpwn was named descriptively after the form of the exploit (which allowed arbitrary writing to a 24kb block of memory).

With all due respect if you make even the slightest attempt with Google to research the steps to JB a 3GS with Blackra1n, you will find lots of tutorials (the ones at iClarified or Hackintosh are good) and the tethered jailbreak is well documented.

You are not the first to claim that the tethered jailbreak is not well documented on the Internet. Sorry, your claim just doesn't hold up.
