Can't Make A Boot Camp Partition!

Whenever I try to make a boot camp partition the screen gets a grey tint and tells me to switch off my mac like in the pic below. I then have to boot on to the leopard DVD and repair Macintosh HD form there like in the video below. Any ideas? Sos about the pic being so bad quality; I only had my iPhone to hand and you can't embed in forum posts so just follow the link if you're interested.

I think you'll need to backup everything and restore....

I remember reading about this problem. If i remember correctly, you will need to use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to make an exact copy of your hard drive to an external drive. Then, I think you need to boot up from the external drive, format you hard drive and use the Carbon Copy Cloner program to copy your data back to your hard drive. Next, boot up from hard drive and try to use Boot Camp again. It should work.

Before doing any of this stuff, you should probably do a few searches and make sure that my information is correct.

Check the error. if its HFS_Locked, you need to format your disk. Do a time machine or Carbon Copy back up and format and restore.

Hi, when i first got my iMac i partitioned it for a 45GB Boot Camp Partition to install Windows XP. It worked perfectly and i ran it until i had to erase it from all the Spyware that had infected it. (I wasn't connected to the Net! )

Then, i installed Mac OS X 10.4.10 and thats when the problem started. Boot Camp wouldn't make ANY boot camp partition. Or so I thought.
I tried time and time again to make a partition for Windows (vista this time ) and it failed, until i found a setting that works, it seems that Boot Camp for me doesn't let me create Partitions of over 23GB, 23GB and under work perfectly, no kernel panics.

Overall, i think it is a problem with the amount of content on the HDD installed in your Mac. But my friend has a Mac Pro with 4TB of HDD Space and it crashes on over 23GB.

Apple....You have either intentionally or unintentionally crippled what was good software into something unusable unless you are pretty hard-headed and keep trying until you get it. Does anyone here agree?

Ah, The lowest I have tried is 30GB but I guess I could manage 23 and use XP instead. I'll see how it goes, I wanted to use it for gaming really. I could possibly repartition with Drive Genius 2 (a very good product) but I guess I'm thinking too far ahead.

I'm suprised you got it working. As far as I know, Boot Camp only works with Leopard (10.5.x)

Try it with Leopard, and your problems may go away.

The early betas needed 10.4.6, and the previous poster does mention that it was a while ago. I think it was probably a supported configuration

Once set up, a Bootcamp partition will continue to work, be it Tiger or Leopard.

To install with Tiger, you just need to set the system clock back before October 1st, 2007. Then use Bootcamp to create the Bootcamp partition.

Once done, set the system clock back to the current time. IIRC, there was an Apple info sheet on doing this.

The only issue will be drivers, and making sure you have the latest.

The easy way is to use Leopard, but you can still do it with Tiger. YMMV.

for the moment you can download the Boot Camp 2.0 drivers via BitTorrent here.

my guess is the 2.1 drivers will also be put up so users still on Tiger can still be up to date.

I think it's because journaling pretty much busted in 10.5.2 the drive became fragmented, this is what happened with mine.

You need to get a program like iDefrag or DiskWarrior and defrag the disk, then it will partition no problem.

I made the partition easily when it was 23GB! Weird, eh? I also did a software update to 10.5.3 but I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

Restart your Mac from the OS X installer DVD, open the Disk Utility app and make your own partition of any size (will not erase your HD unless you try to make it bigger than the free space you have available) and then restart and install XP from your Windows CD!
