I have a 15" MBP from late 2009 and OS X won't let me modify files on unlocked SD cards. Is it a hardware issue or software, and how can I fix it?
Is it formatted in NTFS? If so, then you can only read the contents unless you install a third party plugin.
Is write protection enabled?

I meant non-write-protected. My bad.
Actually it's my bad, I just couldn't read properly.
What about using those cards in Windows or have you taken a look at SHARING & PERMISSIONS in the GET INFO window?
Hmm, I don't have Windows set up at the moment... I had it but I was running low on space, so I'm making a bigger windows partition and installing it later.
Anyway, I checked the Sharing and Perms box, and it says "You can only read"
Solution: reinsert the SD card. After spending ages trying to figure this out, I've discovered that the way you insert the SD card into the MBP's SD card slot alters its Sharing & Permissions. Instead of sliding it in, I gave it a firm tap and Permissions read: read and write. When I slowly slid it in again, no firm tap this time, I got: read only. Bizarre. I assume it's a contacts problem. I found this solution on another forum, so another person had the same problem.
I found out that the problem is related to the lock sensor on the sd card reader. If you leave the lock latch between locked and unlocked it will work properly
This has been driving me crazy! Just bought a 8gb Sandisk SD card which writes well in my wife's VAIO but is 'read only' in my MBP. I did the above and with the switch at very nearly half way down it gave me 'custom access', but still couldn't write. Then a millimetre more and it gave me the coveted 'read/write' access and disk utility could find it (though still can't format - had to use the VAIO).
So something wrong with the MBP hardware then?! Pretty frustrating...
[doublepost=1508100077][/doublepost]thanks for this, this has actually been driving me batty for ages and the nudging it on bit by bit worked a treat, i started with it in locked state and moved it on as you suggested until it came aliveFinally!
