Can't move any files - permissions all screwed up it says

Yes, I have run disk utility, no it did nothing.

I have a new MacMini running 10.8 on OS SSD.

I have two externals, lets call HHD1 and HHD2. HHD2 is dying so yesterday I was trying to rescue its contents by dragging them to HHD1 except I kept getting an error the operation wasn't allowed because I didn't have permission with some of the items (this would happen with each individual item as well). I found a way around this by using Carbon Copy Cloner to move the files over--success. I let it run overnight.

This morning I download VLC for myself but got the same permission error when dragging the program from the DMG to my applications this time on my OS SSD (the problem has spread somehow after my success with CCC).

As far as permissions, I don't see anything that doesn't give me (administrator) read and write. Users is read and write too, Everyone else is set to read but I thought that's okay.

This actually happened to me years ago with Leopard and I thought I had to use a tool to correct permissions in a volume. Any ideas?

That only helps with things Installer installed. For this, a more hands-on approach is needed. You could change the owner of the offending files to yourself via Finder's Get Info window, then give the correct permissions to the files. That will at least permit you to use them normally.

Thanks for those replies.. However I already did both of those suggestions. The first suggestion was my first sentence in this thread. And my permissions seem to be fine in the "get info" region.

well no it wasn't really.
you said you tried disk utility, you didn't say you have run a repair permissions.

Create a new user in System Preferences and see if it works there. If so, log back into your account. Sometimes this fixes it.

Otherwise try resetting home folder permissions and ACLs from the recovery partition.

It does with work another user! But when I came back it still didn't work.

BUT then I did a restart and now it works?! Thanks for the help!

Not sure why that happened?
