5 hours later. . .and no joy. it's still flashing. . .can my macbook pro just not recharge this puppy? should i just accept i have to recharge my ipod on my old g4 tower?

It should work just fine. Try resetting your shuffle. If it doesn't work, bring both in to an apple store.

It might not charge if you're running the MBP under battery. Try plugging it in if it isn't already.

If it's mounted on your Desktop, it will always flash orange, indicating that it isn't safe to disconnect it. You have to "eject" it first, then it will show solid orange while charging, changing to solid green when fully charged.
