Can't pair Airpods with Nvidia Shield

I have Airpods (the ones before the latest Pro's) and I'm trying to connect them to my Nvidia Shield. I followed the steps on the website below, but with no luck. It recognises them but says 'couldn't pair'.

AirPods connect automagically with iPhone, but you can manually pair them with Apple TV, Android phones, or any device that supports Bluetooth!

I did, don't ask what I did differently though, lol! However, the sound stutters and I can only get sound in the right Airpod. I know the Airpods are not faulty though.
