Hi there,

For three months now I'm working on a Macbook Pro M1. Quite like it so far after switching from Windows. However I ended up with my print server not printing all of the times. I'm unsure if this is due to the way I set it up in my mac or its because of my printserver. If I therefore posted this in the wrong forum, I am sorry.

First, let me explain how I set it up:

I have a NAS: a Zyxel NSA325-v2, updated to the most recent firmware: V4.81(AALS.1), its IP-adress is 192.168.1.160, which I set to static.
My printer is a Samsung Series M2022, which is hooked up with the Zyxel NAS through a USB cable.
When the printer is on, it shows on my NAS as 'Samsung_Elec_1'. On some internet post I read that changing the name that appears in the print-server of the NAS doesn't do much good, so I left it as is.

On my Mac I did the following:
1. Opened up system preferences > printers
2. Added a printer
3. Through the advanced options I set up the following:
A. Type: "Windows printer via sspools", URL: "ipp://NASlogin:NASpassword@192.168.1.160/Samsung_Elec_1
B. Name and location, just some name and location
C. Software/Drives chosen: 'Samsung M2020 series'.

This sets up the printer and makes it work! I can send a print from most applications (didn't try them all). However, after maybe 3/4 hours, or after logging out on my mac and loggin back in, the printer appears online, it appears online in the NAS interface, but my mac ends up 'pausing' the print. Logically, nothing comes out of the printer.
I then reset the NAS or have it restart from the interface, which makes printing available again (without adding the printer again on my mac).

Is this due to the way I set it up on my mac? Is it a m1/big sur problem? Or, should I've posted this problem at the Zyxel forums ;)

Someone here may have a clue but support or forums for the NAS is probably going to be a better route.

I am wondering, however, why you don't just connect the printer to your local network.

Thanks for your reply Brian, and you're correct. Forgot to add that to my first post.

The Samsung M2020 is a very basic laserprinter, i.e. it does not have wifi/ethernet connection and can only print black and white. Same goes for the NSA325 NAS, which isn't a recent model. However, both work perfectly fine and thought it would be a shame to throw them away.
Why not connecting through the USB cable? My girlfriend wants to be able to print as well, so hooking it up to the network seemed like a nice option.

I might check the NAS forums and post the same question there. I was curious if it could be a problem due to the way I set it up on my mac as I am a total newbie...

Ok…no networking.

You could share it from connected via USB to either the Mac or the Windows machine but if we're talking laptops then that's a pain.

Does this problem exist for the Windows computer?
