I have a mid 2011 mac book pro, i decided to do a clean install as there was so much junk on it I jus=t wanted to start afresh.
I have done this before with no trouble at all, except for the time it takes.
Anyhow, used ctrl+****=option+r and did the normal thing except it tried to OS Lion, i stopped the install and tried again but all it does is try to install OS Lion.
I made a USB with the OS on it some time back and tried that, that failed.

I thought i would let it install Lion, then up grade, it never gets to a full install.

At the moment it is trying to install High Sierra but it is taking for ever but the strange thin is it has not asked for my internet connection?

The disk is not faulty as i ran the disk utility and checked it and it came back all ok.

Are you willing to erase the internal drive and "start over"?

Then... try booting to INTERNET recovery.
This is NOT THE SAME AS "the recovery partition".

a. Power down.

b. Boot to Internet recovery:
Command-OPTION-R

c. You'll need your wifi password. Be patient "as the globe spins".

d. When the internet utilities are loaded, open disk utility.

e. VERY IMPORTANT STEP:
If there is a "view" menu, you MUST go to it and choose "show all devices".
If there is NOT a view menu, skip and go to next step.

f. Look at "the list on the left". The topmost item is the physical drive inside. Click on it, and then click "erase".

g. Erase the drive to "Mac OS extended, journaling enabled, GUID partition format".

h. Once the drive is erased, open the OS installer. I believe it should offer you OS 10.13 "High Sierra".

i. Start clicking through. The Mac will reboot one or more times, and the screen may go dark for a minute or more with no other indication of activity. Just be patient.

j. When the install is done, you should see the initial setup screen (choose your language). Start clicking through.

k. Setup assistant will ask if you wish to migrate from another (backup) drive. At this point it's "your choice" --- either restore from backups, or start anew with a fresh account.

Good luck.

Sorry for the late reply on this.
I have no clue as to what went wrong but i tried a couple of times again (wiping the entire drive in Disk Utility) and it went in ok.
I have reinstalled the OS on the MBP and a previous that I had a few times before but have no idea why it went FUBAR this time.
All well that ends well 👍
