Have you tried deleting it out of app switcher/multitasking?

Tried turning iMessage in settings on and off?

If all that does work. Um… try holding the power button, once it pops up hold the home button. It recalibrates the home button, but also causes the app to crash and reset. I think

If all fails. Just do a fresh restore as a new phone.

closing messages in the task switcher gets rid of it

Turn off your iPhone, turn it back on. Close messages completely, re open it. A problem like this usually is temporary

Closing the messages app fixes it.
