Hello everyone!

I have a little hard case, and I am unsure what could be the issue, or the best steps to follow and I think maybe here someone can help me. I have purchased several Mac Pro, and this one was sold as defect. I want to repair it, but just starting with he most basic steps I am already facing troubles. I did not dissembled yet to see the CPU, in case is this and someone make a problem in there by trying to replace CPU.. (this unit is 4-core)

Device: Mac Pro 6.1 (2013) + Only 1 GPU + RAM/SSD Apple Original.
My main target is to restore, to start from there, but I can not even restore it:
- I had Monterey installed in the SSD from other MacPro and working perfectly fine.
- In this "defect" unit, was running VERY slow the same SSD, FAN at max since start.
- Cleaned with Air pressure
- SMC properly performed
- PRAM wont work, you get 1 chime, and wont turn back on, at least you release, and click again power button.
- Monterey clean install wont finish. "1min remaining" 4-5 times I tried.
- Yosemite Restore (Ctrl+R) wont finish either, it goes till “X min remaining" tried 4 times.
- Current Step: I will try installing Yosemite in External SSD, to see if same results in performance. And install from this external user in the internal SSD.

In the meanwhile while sorting this last part this weekend, can someone please guide me or tell me if this is because something specific damage in hardware, or other suggestion to keep trying please!?

Ill much appreciate. Best Regards! :)

Can you run this?
don't working nvram could be a worn out SMC battery.

Thanks guys! Indeed the Hardware Test it was the next step list I had, as I never runned, but I decided to go ahead with the thread before that. I thought it was much more longer the test.. 😅

So both of you pointed straight! Because I did the test, and indeed pointing to SMC. I hope that replacing it, and restoring make the fix for the 3 errors! But as well I a gonna try this (I dont have it with me), because it might be is just the GPU not properly connected!!🤞

Ill keep updated for futre help, or future people facing the same.

If you need to take it apart, replace the battery with the correct BR type, even when it is not measured completely dead.

As taking a cylinder apart are only simple xx steps...

People often use CR types as they are better available, but these CR don't last long and are not certified for high temperatures.

Hello guys,

I am coming with updates in the steps done, it took me a while sorry. But anyway, lets see if you can find other suggestions based on the updates: We replaced the battery but still working as before.

- DR2032 battery replaced, and well mounted back.
- Hardware Test giving exact same results. (PFM006 + VFD001 + VFF001)
- Not doing PRAM
- Fan goes to high straight away.
- Extremely slow when moving just the mouse to just select the things prior the restoring. (Like before)
- Going very slow the recovery. I leave it hours, and then is off. Assuming is going to the restart part, and never comeback again.

My next steps after leaving it long to restore:
1- Install Mojave in external SSD. Run Mojave from the external to see if differences in the Mac Pro.
2- If not working Mojave, Ill install Maveriks in External. To see the same.

Please, any other suggestions or possible reasons? Or things should I pay attention?
Unfortunately I am not having the skills and tools to check the chips itself, but wondering if I might be missing something to check that might cause the described issues. The MacPro has just one slot D300 Graphic Card and another thing, the secure plastic cover for the top part is not there, in case is creating something or in case might trigger other suggestions.

I hope you can help me to find out what is happening with it 😢
Thanks and Best regards.

Current status and celaner details:
Mac Pro 6.1 (2013) 4 Core
ONLY 1 GPU (D300) + Original RAM/SSD.

Symptoms:

  • Fan at max from startup, very slow performance.
  • SMC Done. PRAM not working.
  • PRAM only chimes once if it does. Then requires power button press to turn on.
  • Apple Hardware Test delivering: PFM006, VFD001, VFF001.
  • Not able to recover/restore it. Long restores eventually power off after many hours.
Current Steps done:
  • Replaced DR2032 battery, no change in performance. Still PFM006, VFD001, VFF001
  • Fan still at max, mouse sluggish even in recovery.
  • Now recovery was completed. But still the same slow.
  • Tried with MacOS Monterey and Mojave from External, and still running slow.

Seeking Guidance: Could these issues be tied to specific hardware damage? or are there additional steps to try?
Searching for someone super amazing person to get me some more insights 😅🤣
Note: lacking tools to inspect chips.
