Can’t Restore from iTunes

Bought a new iPad Pro. Backed up my old iPad Air to iTunes on my MBP. Turned on my new iPad and got to the option to Restore from iTunes. Connected it to my MBP, iTunes popped up. Clicked on ‘Restore from this backup’, selected my old iPad, Continue, iTunes is asking for a password to unlock ‘your iPad backup’. I’ve tried the iTunes password, old iPad unlock code, new iPad unlock code and my MBP password, but I keep getting ‘iTunes could not restore the iPad “xxx xxxx” because the password was incorrect’.

Which password is iTunes asking for? Thanks

Did you ever change your iTunes password to a new password since originally setting up your Air? If so, and I know it’s a long shot, but if you did change it and you can remember that original password, try entering that password and see if that works.

Thanks, yes, and I might have that written down somewhere. So, iTunes is asking for the iTunes Password?

I guess the other option is to restore from iCloud, but I wanted to get passwords etc onto the new pad, also, would iTunes ask for a password to go that route?

When I get a new device, I avoid iTunes all together. I back up my current device to iCloud from the device itself, turn off “Find My iPhone/iPad,” sign out of iCloud, turn on the new device and restore from the iCloud backup I just made on the old device. Your Apple ID/iTunes password will be asked for at some point, but it should be the password you use currently, not the original password I was talking about earlier. For some reason iTunes always wants your original password you used when you first set up your old device if you set it up using iTunes, otherwise your current password should work fine if you set up/restore using iCloud from the devices themselves.

As far as transferring passwords, if you’re using iCloud Keychain, these passwords will be part of the backup that is restored to your new iPad.

iCloud is the way to go these days, now remember to back-up very so often!
