I'm helping a friend of mine who is having issues with his iPod. His iPod is a 6th generation iPod classic (80 GB).

The first issue is that the iPod will not show up in iTunes. When it is plugged in, iTunes freezes up, both on Mac and Windows, on multiple machines.

The second issue is that his iPod has 22 GB of "Other" space being used, that is music, however, under the Music menu, it says that there is no music.

The third issue is that it is impossible to restore the iPod because it causes iTunes to freeze.

What can I do to restore the iPod?

I've had this happen several times. The conclusion I came to is that my iTunes was too full of music and it wouldn't connect or sync or even show up on my iTunes/mac. Luckily I work from home and have a small office with several computers and was able to connect to another computer without any or much music so iTunes was not working too much and get it charged and fixed up. Any restoring that I had to do to that iPod was done on the other computer and then I was able to connect to the regular computer that I normally sync with. Hope that helps.
