Can't rip one DVD

I've been slowly copying over my DVD collection to iTunes and I have one DVD that just won't work. It's quite an old film (from the 80s) released on DVD a couple of years back, not the sort of thing to have decent copy protection or anything. Problems are like this:

MakeMKV simply says it can't open the disc
HandBrake works but it's only the first 22 minutes, never more.
I then downloaded and tried MacX DVD Ripper and got the same result as Handbrake.

The DVD works fine playing on a DVD player or on my iMac.

Is there any hope or do I have to simply give up on this one?

I'd recommend trying the free trial of Mac DVD Ripper Pro, found here: http://www.macdvdripperpro.com/ to make a .iso copy of the DVD and running that through handbrake. If that doesn't work, let MakeMKV take a swing at the .iso copy to see if it can successfully transcode the movie into a .mkv, which you can then feed into handbrake (I know, seems like a complicated work around, but it usually works).

In my experience, its done the best jobs on damaged dvds, so it might work for you too.
 
Play the film on your computer and note which 'title' # the actual film is. Then use handbrake to 'open (title specific)'. Select that title only and the rip/encode should work.

That was what I tried originally but was unsuccessful, thank you though.

Gave it a whirl this morning and it couldn't read the disc at all. Thanks for the idea though.

The iso didn't work, still got my 20 something minutes but I then tried (out of desperation) letting Mac DVD Ripper Pro do the whole thing, rip it and encode it and hey presto, it worked!

Thank you very much for the suggestion, I will be buying that bit of software to aid future copying efforts.
 
If you do get it into an MKV file, don't use Handbrake. That is a lossy conversion which isn't necessary. MP4Tools can do it losslessly.
 
DVDs to Mac

I'd recommend trying the Leawo DVD Ripper , to make a .iso copy of the DVD and running that through handbrake. If it doesn't work, let MakeMKV take a swing at the .iso copy to see if it can successfully transcode the movie into a .mkv, which you can then feed into handbrake.

The Dynamic Library of your ripper did not contain the data to decrypt the DVD. You can try the demo version of brorsoft dvd ripper for mac. I'm not sure whether it can help you, but I've never met a problem during my ripping. Just mu personal recommendation.

Not with a DVD, which is MPEG2. It's also, (IMO) a bit foolish to waste 4-9 GB of space on a standard definition DVD movie when you can have a virtually identical MP4 version in less than half the space.

Out of curiousity, what's the movie?
 
If You by any chance have Windows machine, try dvd decrypter.
Although development was shutdown, it might work.
 
Is it possible the disk is scratched? Thats the first thing that comes to mind when you say that its the only one that wouldn't work.
