I have my new 2.6 mac mini, 16gb of crucial memory and samsung sad (memory and ssd not fitted yet)

I cant get to the DMG of the orginal install, I just get "an error has occurred while preparing this installation" and if I try and use the 8GB USB3 USB as a destination, it says I need another 4.7gb?????

HELP! :(

I want to rip to a memory stick to avoid long reinstall times

The new Mini uses a special build of 10.8.2, so if you are trying to use an older installer it will not work.

You can snag the Mini version of the installer by following this guide. Then use the 4.7GB file you grabbed along with this free app to make your USB install key.

Managed to get it ripped, but for some reason, I can't create a bootable stick.
It says roughly 25 mins to create, but for some reason it stops 15 minutes in with no errors.
Had to restore using internet recovery, which was fine.
Might try using that free App to create it rather than diskutil.

I think I am confused. Currently you won't be able to use an installer for the new 2012 Minis as they don't have a unified one available yet. If you are looking for a clean install at this point your only option is internet recovery. Until the unified one is available your attempts will bear little fruit, unless you are happy that they don't work with the 2012 Mini.

Didn't think Internet Recovery took that long to be honest (less than an hour)

Also you have spent all this time trying to get it working from a USB Stick you could of probably installed it a few times over with Internet Recovery within the same time, just sayin :D

Further, all this time spent trying to make a USB key that will only be "valid" for about a month or so until 10.8.3 comes out. Once it comes out, then if you use your 10.8.2 installer, you will have to download the 10.8.3 updates after you took the time to install 10.8.3. Frankly I would rather just spend the extra 20 minutes at the front end of the reinstall process. Just saying...

Hah, yep you guys are right, I could have just upgraded the SSD and memory in the 30 minutes it took and just done internet recovery, and saved most of my weekend lol..

How I got the DMG in the end was to use an external hard drive to "install" OSXML onto from my mini, and at the point it reboots to black screen, unplug the external hard disk and there is the correct DMG for my machine.

It took around 25 minutes to do the internet recovery in the end, which failed to start with as I hadn't "initialised" the SSD but it still let me wait while it downloaded before saying it failed.

Might give that tool a go now anyway, so I am ready for 10.8.3 :D

p.s. This thing is fast!
