Can't run microsoft app's anymore on iMac

When I try to open any of my PC apps, I get an error message: "PowerPC application" not supported"



I can no longer open up any of my PC applications (like Microsoft word for mac).
They used to run fine before I had my iMac updated to Yosemite.

I also may have changed a setting in my computer (somewhere) unwittingly.



How do I fix this?

What version of OS X were you running previously?

Looking at the specs in your .sig, I'm assuming 10.6.8 or older. If so, PowerPC support was dropped between 10.6.8 and 10.7 (read: Rosetta), so being able to run Power PC applications via emulation on an Intel Mac is no longer possible.

PowerPC apps haven't been supported on OS X since 10.7 - nothing you can do to run them except go back to an old version of OS X with support for Rosetta

IIRC, Pages can save in Word format. Otherwise, the only thing I can suggest is Microsoft Office for Mac. That's exactly what you are looking for. If you can find a previous version that doesn't require their subscription model, you're all good. But with Apple going to Intel-based Macs, they dropped PowerPC support a long time ago.

I'm using Office for Mac 2011 on my mid-2011 MBA without any problems, and that's from Lion, through Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and now Yosemite.

You will not find Microsoft Office in the App. Store.

Microsoft seems to be trying to move to a subscription based model (that I DO NOT agree with). So, if it absolutely has to be MS-Office then this might be your last chance to purchase a stand alone piece of software from them.

Friend, if you don't want to pay for MS Office, go for OpenOffice or LibreOffice or NeoOffice as prisstratton kindly suggested. I used them and they work as a charm and can be called Word lookalikes. You can't go wrong. I have an Acer portable that runs on Linux Mint and I use LibreOffice to do all of my writing, saves as a .docx document and voilà. All of my dear Windows friends read my Word documents with no problems.

Give it a try. If you don't like or don't feel "at home", buy MS Office. Actually, the best suite of them all.

Unless you absolutely, positively MUST have complete compatibility with MS Office, I'd suggest trying LibreOffice instead.

Very usable, it can open many documents created from older Mac applications, and...
... it's free!

Hi Brtova,

I have used all of the apps at one time or another. Both LibreOffice and NeoOffice were forked from OpenOffice several years ago. NeoOffice has been developed since the fork to fit with the Mac environment.

I had no issues using any of them and I could always get done what I needed. I would suggest that you take them for a test drive and see if you like them.

If you have been using MS-Office for many many years then I can see where you would feel more comfortable just staying with what you know.

Since I updated to yosemite, I have also found out that I can no longer access my iPhoto or photoshop, either! This is so frustrating!

The Photos app they replaced iPhotos with is inferior. One example is I can't straighten the picture just a nudge. I can't find anything except a full 1/4 rotation.

Any ideas?

If Photoshop ran on 10.6.8, there is the chance that it is also a PowerPC application, so it would fall under the same issue as Office. You'd either need to find a newer, Intel version of Photoshop, or consider an alternative like the GIMP.

Photos.. not entirely sure on that one, yet. Haven't used it myself on Yosemite to form an opinion.

For Photos, the "nudge" function is located in the cropping tool.

I posted a thread yesterday about not being about to use Silverlight. It's probably been at least a year since I've used it before. No luck now. Also tried Firefox with no luck. I have a bunch of old PCs but they are slower than a snail in peanut butter. I might have to buy a cheap PC just to upload photos to a site that I need to put them on. No way around it either. It uses Silverlight.
