Last month I paid Apple to trade my 1st gen. iPhone (battery worn out) for a new 1st gen. iPhone. Activated it at home using a friend's sim card that was talk only - no data or text attached to her sim ATT account. Tested calling and all features, everything worked (phone calls worked and data applications worked only when in wifi area - could not get Apples standard weather icon application to pull data on the road - good. So the phone worked like a cell phone and like an iTouch because when we connected to iTunes it did not require signing up for monthly data plan, and iTunes synch mechanism worked even after full road testing.
Great, so sent to my Dad so he could pop in his sim card (he too has same ATT voice only plan on his SIM chip).
PROBLEM: Dad hooked up to his iMac which has latest software, all updates, and Tunes 9.03 (15), but iPhone would not show up at all in the sidebar. He then tried to hook to his regular windows computer that had latest iTunes installed and iPhone DID show up, but was requiring him to sign up for monthly data plan (so he unhooked it without choosing anything). Dad asked the AT&T people for help and naturally they want him to commit to a monthly data plan to enjoy using this free phone I gave him.
Dad doesn't want to mess anything up so he's waiting for my help before doing anything. Dad lives out of state and it is not easy to coach him on what to do, however I am traveling to see him in a week. Again, the 1st gen. iPhone and iMac all have the latest software and all updates because last month I gave Dad the iPhone and the iMac (from 2007) - both of which I personally set up for him.
Dad should be able to use it like a regular phone and just use data applications like an iTouch when in a wifi area.
Why does the iPhone not show in iMac iTunes?
We tried without success the easy ideas: hooking into different USB ports, shutting down and restarting etc. Should I uninstall / reinstall iTunes? If so will that require all music (3,000+ songs) to be reloaded? What specific steps, what specific files to delete should I do here? And if that doesn't work, is the only other choice to jailbreak it?
I would prefer NOT to jailbreak the iPhone, but if that is the best solution, would anyone please post detailed instructions on what to do and where to get the programs - I am computer savvy, but have never jailbroken a phone before. I will have one evening with Dad (after Apple service working hours) to try and fix this on my own because I am flying in for a friend's wedding. I will be bringing my macbook pro laptop so if programs are needed I can have those with me and ready. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.
