I was trying to troubleshoot why one of my four IMAP Email accounts (Comcast) was getting stuck checking mail so I deleted it and the re-added it. Only to find that it defaulted to POP with no way to change it to IMAP. If I changed the incoming server and port, it seemed to work but the folders behaved as though they were still POP and did not sync with the server.

After some time on the Phone with Apple support, they were unable to find a way to select IMAP during setup or change POP to IMAP after the fact.

While messing around with them on the phone, I actually found the workaround.... Apparently the POP / IMAP selection only appears if the setup routine does not get a default setup from the ISP's server. If it successfully pulls down a default setup (POP in my case), it does not offer the selection buttons.

The work around was to intentionally enter the wrong password for the account. The setup routine complains that the password is incorrect and then adds the POP / IMAP buttons to the top of the screen. Select IMAP and supply the correct password and it sets up as IMAP.

I'm running ios 18.1b7 but I'm pretty sure this inability to select the account type has been an issue for years.

Oh, and after re-adding the account, it no longer gets stuck. So far....

Remove and re-add it, but purposefully mis-type the password. Then it'll let you do a manual setup.
