cant send mail !!

i have set up my mail on my new powerbook i have set up all the pop accounts i retreive my mail from all of my email accounts through desktop mail but i cannot for the life of me work out why i cannot send mail its driving me crazy i get one of 3 messages when i try and send
1. sending error mail saved to outbox for sending later

2. the outgoing server is not recognised

3. the outgoing server rejects the email address im trying to send to

please help !!!

Are you using the correct outgoing (smtp) mailserver for your ISP? Most isp's won't allow use of any other smtp servers besides their own.

mmmmm interesting thats probably the only thing i have not tried i use tiscali for my internet where can i get there smtp address from?? at the moment i am just trying to send email out through mail using smtp.yahoo.com as that is where my email address is but it is definately not working

Just as an addendum to this thread, if you are experiencing the same problem with a .mac email account then it is worth noting that you can use the .mac SMTP server by changing the SMTP server settings to use port 587 rather than 25. I had this problem with Belgacom's Skynet service and wanted to use the .mac SMTP server so that I wouldn't have to keep changing mail server settings when I wasn't connected to Skynet. Works fine and potentially for other non-ISP email accounts.

Kelmon, thank you so much for adding your addendum to this thread i have been trying for months now to send outgoing mail from my .mac account in mac mail. i entered this port number and instantly it worked thanks again!!
