Pretty sure you need that remote.

I think you'll have to buy a new one, buy they're very cheap.

Visit your parents with the aTV and your TV or cable remote. Connect the aTV and use the remote learning feature, under the settings menu, to teach the aTV to recognize that new remote. That should work without buying a new remote.

temporarily plug the aTV into your router via ethernet, then you can set it up using the iphone remote.

Download the remote APP from the APP store on to your iphone and use that!

Not going to work--how is the OP going to actually select the Sertings menu without an already functioning remote?

Same problem as above. Yes, he won't have to input a wifi password but he still has to turn on home sharing to use the remote app and thus needs an already paired remote.

Did you even read the the OP's original post? Already said he normally uses that app.

Pretty sure you need that remote.

Here's your solution and as mentioned, they're cheap and probably a good idea to have it as a backup in case you have a similar problem in the future.

thanks everyone! i ended up using the ethernet hookup and taught my :apple: TV a new remote. then i moved the apple tv to my room and setup the wifi with the improvised remote. now i can use my iPhone Remote App! thanks for the help

I had got rid of all my apple remotes. then one of the updates reset the device. Just ended up going to best buy and picked one up. will keep it on hand just in case.

It should have a pair option for the iPhone app out the box once on the same network

Yeah you can download the app in your iphone and you can actually use that. :)
