Once a photo makes it into iCloud, I'm doomed. No matter what button under 'share' I choose, I get this error:

And from 'messages' when I try to send a photo from the photo reel, nothing happens. Photos are in iCloud are indicated there with little cloud icons.

Happened sometimes before, but happening constantly since public beta 3

I'm still getting this problem constantly and it's annoying AF. For any photos that are, say, a week or more older, if I click on the edit button I get the error "cannot download photo. There was an error downloading this photo from your iCloud Photo Library. Please try again later." And if I try to share it using the share button, I still get the error above.

I don't get it for recent photos, so I can only guess that it's a bug with iCloud. Strange that the issue has persisted for over 4 months now.

Also, a similar issue used to be present on the Mac (High Sierra beta) desktop version of Photos, where you would try to export photos and sometimes it would be really slow or just give up entirely, but that issue has been gone for a while.

I am going to tentatively say that this has been fixed. I haven't gotten this problem in over a week.

I upgraded to iPhone X but that hadn't solved the problem right away. Maybe the issue was server-side on iCloud, because when you try to copy multiple images, a little pie chart loading thing comes up and it says "preparing." I'm guessing this means it is downloading the photos from iCloud into memory.

yes it's always pulling from the cloud when you have the pie thing

check your phone storage and make sure you're on a good internet connection

i'd also like to mention that you're on a beta (from your signature) and these types of issues are more prevalent on beta software

if stability is extremely important to you, you should get off the beta

and if you don't want to deal with pulling your images from the cloud, turn off icloud photo library

Argh, I spoke too soon. The issue is back.
It very well might be because I'm on the beta program, but my iOS merged with the 11.2.5 alpha that just came out, it's not on 11.3 yet.
It happens whether I'm on wifi or LTE.
Not a big enough issue where I ditch the beta, but nevertheless still an issue. I still think the problem is within Apple's iCloud software, but I'm curious to see if anyone on the stable release has this problem.

This is one of those benefits that’s a pain in the arse at the same time. Especially with videos!

This isn't a beta issue. This has been going on since iOS 11 for me and no update has fixed it.

It won't download a picture from iCloud photos if you're on Low Battery mode.

Holy crap, you’re absolutely right. I just turned lower power mode off and it worked fine. Thank you!!!
Would be nice if Apple actually had a meaningful error message instead of just cannot download photo...

I wish iCloud Photo Library weren't so aggressive about purging originals of photos. I have 40GB free; it shouldn't be purging photos I took two weeks ago.

This seems to be new to iOS 11. in the past it would store like 9 GB of my library on the phone. Nowadays it’s 2 GB and new photos get uploaded and wiped from local storage instantly
