so I converted a couple dvds with Handbrake to watch on my apple tv. I also wanted to be able to sync the movies with my iphone, but that doesn't seem to work. Every time I try to sync it, it tells me it cannt sync because it cannot be played on this iphone... When I converted the dvds with handbrake, I used the apple tv preset and didn't change any settings. Did I do something wrong, or is there another preset I need to use to be able to play my movies on both devices?

I can't remember what the issue is exactly, either the file size is too big or the iphone can't handle to Apple TV resolution. You either need to convert the Apple TV video to something iphone friendly or I reccomend running the DVD through handbrake again with either the iPhone/iPod Touch preset or the iPod Hi-Res preset.

The AppleTV preset uses x264 options (ie. b-frames) that are incompatible with iPhones. The iPhone can handle the resolution, bitrate, and audio options (AAC+AC3) that the AppleTV can.

The iPhone can't handle the Main Progressive profile that the Apple TV encoding uses, regardless of resolution.

If the Basic Profile is used (the iPod/iPhone one), then the max res is 720x480, although anamorphic encoding can be used.

If you want one file that works on multiple devices, you'll have to encode for the device with the lowest specs.

I made a HB preset that basically started with the iPod High-Rez preset and switched the audio to AAC+AC3 and cranked the average bit rate up to the iPod max of 2500kbps. When applicable, I use Anamorphic to get the most resolution possible. Works great on my iPods, iPhone, Xbox 360, and PS3.
