I am old school. I don’t think, I have ever updated any of my iPhones in the last 12 years over the air. I have always connected them to my Mac and updated them through iTunes or, now, through the Finder.

As of this morning at 7:17 AM EDT the Finder still tells me that iOS 16.0.2 is the latest version. Odd thing, too, is that I have to close this dialog

three times in a row, before it is gone.

By contrast, on my phone, inside of Settings→General→Software Update, 16.0.3 is available. I have never had a software update not come through for this long after its availability was announced.

It has never taken longer than a few hours from when an update was officially released that the update became available to me. What is going on?

I just started downloading it. This is by far the longest it has taken to actually get access to an update from the time that the announcement of its availability went out.

It's time to join the modern era and update over the air. Updating from a connected Mac holds no advantage.

That's true. FWIW, I have found iCloud backup to be very effective.

Is the iCloud backup encrypted? From what I remember, it isn’t. That’s how law enforcement agencies have been able to get around not being able to get into a locked iPhone.

Availability delay: yeah, I wound up getting the ipsw directly from Apple's CDN servers.

iCloud Backup: correct, not encrypted. Here is a note about the types of iCloud data and level of encryption.

Happen to have a link to the IPSW? Every link I'm trying is just getting me a blank page.

I found a blogger that posted the links to the various model flavors.

It looks like ipsw.me is updated (sometime on 10/11; at least my model and a couple of others I spot checked have working links).

I'll give that one a try. In trying iClarified, RedmondPie, OSXDaily, and a few other sites that aggregated them, and all got me the same result. Thanks!

I have a similar problem, although I can see the update OTA. Can‘t update on iPhone 11 :-/ Verifying always fails. I get the message that the connection to the internet has been lost (which is not the case). I tried resetting, restarting, installing on my mac, switching the network etc. all to no avail. I have about 10 gigs of free space on my phone as well. any ideas? best, max

What I do is on my Mac, I first take a backup of the phone. Make sure you have that. I was just able to get the full IPSW. If you can download that to your Mac, do that. After that:

  1. Plug in your phone. It should show up in your finder.
  2. Go to your phone on the Mac. Hold down the option key when you click on Update (It may say Check for update).
  3. Select the IPSW you downloaded.
After that, the Mac should take care of everything for you. Just follow the prompts. But be sure to back up your phone, first and foremost.
